How to Apply

BFA Scene Design

Applying to the BFA Scene Design program involves submitting all required application materials and completing an interview. All of your application materials must be received no later February 1 or two weeks prior to your interview date, whichever date is earlier.

Before you can register for your Scene Design interview, you will need to pay the interview fee and upload the following major-specific materials to your Blue Demon Domain:

Your resume can include both theatre experience and non-theatre experience in allied fields like fine art, dance, media, and/or other community related work like teaching young children, extracurricular volunteering work, part-time employment, etc. A section detailing special skills like drafting, model building, crafts and/or software knowledge is highly recommended.

Your portfolio will steer the interview conversation and should demonstrate your talent and potential as a student for the BFA Scene Design program.

Applicants should present a portfolio which includes materials that demonstrate artistic curiosity and creativity. Drawings, photographs, sketches, sculptures, paintings - and all kinds of process work - are all welcome. Set designs and draftings (including technical drawings, sketches for props, and scenic painting samples) are appropriate if you have that experience. However, they are not required.

The best way to put together a portfolio is to select 10 to 20 pieces from your work which demonstrate the strength, depth, and range of your theatrical/artistic abilities and exposure. The selection of pieces in your portfolio tells us a great deal about you, so choose the pieces you think best show your talent and potential for further development.

The Interview

All applicants to the BFA Scene Design program are required to interview one-on-one with a faculty member.  There is no fixed format or list of questions, rather the interview is a conversation and an opportunity for the interviewer to learn about your theatre and leadership experiences, academic record, personal achievements, extracurricular activities and plans for your artistic future.  It is also an opportunity for you to get to know The Theatre School and the Scene Design program, specifically.  The questions you have for us are as important as the questions we have for you.  The best preparation for the interview is to be curious.  Explore the information provided on our website and come with plenty of questions about courses, instructors, student life and anything else you would like to discuss.
