In 1930s South Side Chicago, Bigger Thomas lands a job with a wealthy white family but his fate is sealed when a violent act unleashes a chain of events that cannot be undone. This adaption of Richard Wright’s groundbreaking novel Native Son by Theatre School alumna Nambi E. Kelley explores the systemic racism and poverty that oppressed Bigger Thomas from birth.

Recommended for mature audiences.

Performances Interpreted in American Sign Language & Assisted Listening Devices:

We offer American Sign Language interpretation presented by theatrically trained certified interpreters. Leading up to an interpreted performance, interpreters see the play multiple times, practice with recordings, and determine sign names for the characters in the play. We are happy to provide a script in advance to audience members who request this service. Contact the box office at theatreboxoffice@depaul.edu to request a script. We also offer ListenUp! personal listening devices for each performance. These assistive listening devices are available free of charge to patrons upon request.

Audio Description Services:

The performance of Native Son on 2/18 at 2 PM will include a live audio-description of the visual and physical events on-stage for patrons who are blind or have low vision. We also invite you to join us that day for a pre-performance program with a touch tour, which begins at 12:30 PM in the Fullerton Stage lobby. The touch tour program will include information about the characters and design choices that add to the world of the play. Patrons who are participating in the audio-described event may also request the playbill in Braille, large print, and audio formats.
